Geoscience Australia’s Free 1:250,000 Topo Maps

A complete topographical map of Australia is available free in 1:250,000 scale. This is quite adequate to find your way and prevent your getting lost. You can download the maps, copy them to a storage file on your phone and then open them with PDF Maps Or Avenza – if you want to be restricted to opening only three of them at a time.

Another advantage of using the older (Pdf Maps) App is that it will not update so that it will always work while the maps are stored on your phone. Great for peace of mind. The newer version might update and eg turn into a paid only version just when you find yourself geographically challenged in some unlikely locale!

They are georeferenced. I checked – we live in the map entitled ‘Warragul’. When I pressed the GPS button on the map with ‘Location’ enabled on my phone it found me in seconds. You will know where you are to within 100 metres! How good is that for free?

They are available here. http://geoscience-au.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/7e8e72ea0cc042f588d1883d0e57d855

The whole of Gippsland is comprised of just six maps: Warburton, Warragul, Wangaratta, Bairnsdale, Tallangatta, Malacoota, (Bega) Add Melbourne and Port Phillip Special to give you all the urban area and much more. Great for sambar deer hunting or 4WDing!

All of NSW (six maps) is available for free here: https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/etopo.html

These maps can be used with the Paper Maps App or Avenza.

NB. Note the comment below (on the previous post) from Scott. Hey Steve, I thought these downloadable maps might be of interest to you. A bloke on an Aussie hunting forum set it up for himself and then made it publicly available for free.http://www.getlost.com.au/downloads/ This bloke is certainly taking a big risk but it really does look as if he has posted eg all the Vicmaps to be downloaded for free. I haven’t yet checked whether they are Georeferenced and will work with your phone’s GPS but I suspect they are. My advice to anyone watching is ‘Get them while they are available!’ NBB: Be sure to switch on your VPN before you download them!

    1. Crikey Scott, This is amazing! Thanks a million! This bloke is certainly taking a big risk but it really does look as if he has posted eg all the Vicmaps to be downloaded for free. I haven’t yet checked whether they are Georeferenced and will work with your phone’s GPS but I suspect they are. My advice to anyone listening is ‘Get them while they are available!’ Cheers, Steve.
