Damsons

(Della):

We planted a damson tree a few decades ago. I seldom get around to saving the fruit from the birds but this year, after seeing our enormous and trusty quince tree keel over in the last storm, I decided that damson cheese might make a timely change from quince paste on the cheese platter. I have to say, this jet-black paste is rich and mellow in flavour and would be equally at home on a slice of buttered toast or warm scone…And the bonus is, we have a second mature quince tree that ripens later than our fallen one, so I have never needed to pick its fruit. If I have excess energy later in the preserving season we might get quince paste too…

PS, If anyone nearby wants some damsons, give me a yell before the birds move in!
