Ultralight Ultracheap Rain Fly

Can’t make your own? How about this one? 310 grams US$28.43 (April 2020). 3000 mm waterproof. You couldn’t make it for this. Of course you can’t use it as a hammock tarp as well like mine but it is the beginning of a good cheap hiking kit. You can pair it with a bathtub floor and mosquito net set-up very cheaply too, but I think you can get by with a 50 gram space blanket for a groundsheet, and they cost around $2 each (on eBay etc).

Aricxi New Version Tarp alone 308 grams US $29.70 Accessories (rope, pegs etc) 91 grams, Total 408 grams?

If you really think you need a groundsheet or a mosquito net. You could try this Cheap Bathtub Floor or this, Do You Need a Bug Net or  a Tent Floor. Still won’t break the bank.

Now all you need is a cheap backpack. We modified and have been using these ones which cost less than $20 for a while now and find them better and more comfortable than any of the expensive ones we used in the past. we won’t be going back. Here are some other backpack facts.

You can get a cheap ultralight down bag for less than $100.

Though you can get by with a cheap mat like the Vertex ( for US$40) I would recommend either the Thermarest Neoair Womens we used for years or the Exped Synmat HL Winter (as it is nearly 4″ thick and super comfortable) especially in cold weather. The most important thing which will ensure you have a great trip is getting a good night’s sleep.

Of course you need a pillow. I have been using this one constantly for months. Some other budget ideas here.
