Best Hiking Headtorch

Nitecore’s NU25 rechargeable torch is very hard to beat – though no doubt it will be (by their next model). It weighs around 28 grams without the band (which weighs another 23 grams). You can save 22 of these grams (as I have done here) by fitting a piece of dyneema cord and a micro-cord lock which work just as well around camp bringing the overall weight of the torch with headband to 29.5 grams!

You could trim it even further. The tilt adjuster appears to weigh around 5 grams so that if you removed it and epoxied a piece of carbon fibre tube to the torch instead to pass the cord through you could save 4 grams bringing the torch down to about 24 grams altogether. I think the 4 grams is worth the ability to tilt it though.

The torch has a maximum brightness of 360 lumens for 30 minutes, 190 lumens for 5 hours, 38 lumens for 8 hours and i lumen for 160 hours. See the full spec here. One of the best features is a button lock so you don’t accidentally leave/turn it on. It has a 2.2 Whr battery which they claim is equivalent to 3 x AAA batteries. I charge mine (and other devices with an  Ultralight Power Bank. Various sizes are available. The 1/2 cell ones are sufficient for most short trips. The single cell one will weigh around 75 grams and cost about $10 and should recharge the torch six times. I use one of these Ultralight Charging Cable.
