Skinners 2.0 Camp Shoes

If you can’t sew yourself a pair of my Sub One Ounce Per Pair Camp Shoes you might consider buying a pair of these Skinners 2.0. They started with them on Kickstarter here. They are all over the internet at the moment. About the lowest I have seen them is around $15 a pair though that might be a Facebook type scam. They are certainly on Ebay from around A$30.

Basically they are a bit of an upgrade of a pair of Sealskin Socks at about twice the weight (and without the waterproofness). I used always to carry such waterproof socks so I could go outside in my wet hiking shoes of a night to attend ‘calls of nature’ etc. They work out about half the weight of these Skinners so if that’s all you want a pair of camp shoes for you might be better to go with that frankly.

Someone has more or less dipped a fairly tough pair of socks into some latex. BTW you can buy liquid latex lots of places – Bunnings for example. It can be used to paint the soles of my DIY camp shoes above if you want extra grip or extra wear (and extra weight) out of them for example. They would still weigh well under two ounces per pair. My wife Della used to do this with felt booties she used to make which weighed a fraction of these Skinners and were much better – and a better fit, but you will have to get your own Della if you want a pair. Not easy. In fact I am still waiting for a pair of her felt slippers and I have been married to her for fifty years!

Because theSkinners have a reasonably tough sole (and now an inner sole as well – or you could use the inner sole from your hiking shoes and save weight as I do) ) you could walk some distance in them (as you could in a pair of Crocs at about twice the weight – and half the price). These work out at about 5.5 oz per pair. There are other water shoes which are about the same weight.

I have suggested many other DIY camp shoes over the years including a pair of things you can make from an inner sole, blue foam flip-flops & etc.

Personally I think you should teach yourself to sew. You could save some dollars and 4.5 oz of weight as well. I have enclosed the pattern below.
